Safety

"As an insurance safety professional, I have performed job site assessments and superintendent training for C.F. Evans and work closely with their full-time safety professional.  It has been a pleasure to work with a multifamily builder with such a strong commitment to the safety and well being of employees on their job sites.  Safety is definitely a top priority in their operations."  -Larry King, Risk Management Specialist, Amerisure Insurance Company

Worksite safety, while always a C.F. Evans priority, became the focus of intense reexamination in 2004, when our rapidly growing company saw the inherent challenges of creating and maintaining safe work environments for our non-English speaking subcontractors and trade partners, especially in our fast-paced, production-oriented building of multifamily projects.  Regardless of whether the project type is multifamily, senior living, commercial, industrial, or of a special nature, construction can be dangerous work.

The company's Experience Modification Rate (EMR) of .86 is attributable to the company's commitment to a comprehensive safety program and consultative services it has received from Safety Management Consultants, Inc., of Columbia, SC.  For our record and initiative to creating and maintaining an accident-free work environment, Carolinas AGC has recognized C.F. Evans with its Construction Safety Excellence Award.

EMR's are calculated by the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI), which computes safety ratings for all businesses and industries.  The average EMR is 1.0.  C.F. Evans's .86 rating means the company has a safety record that is 14% better than the average, resulting in discounts on insurance premiums, savings that can be passed along to clients.

On staff we have a full-time safety manager, who, along with our underwriter, Amerisure Insurance, provides OSHA-certified training and engages all project site personnel in weekly safety audits and real-time instruction.

Our safety program includes:

  • A written safety manual and employee safety handbook.
  • Safety orientation for new hires.
  • Weekly safety "Toolbox Talks" on every job site.
  • Project site- and trade-specific subcontractor safety orientation prior to commencement of work and daily inspections during the course of the project.
  • Competent person training for trenching & excavation, fall protection and scaffolding.
  • Quarterly safety meetings and formal safety training for all field supervisors.
  • A written HazCom policy for compliance with OSHA standards.
  • A drug-free workplace policy and employee assistance program.
  • A policy permitting random drug testing when we determine that the need is indicated, or if it is required by a project owner.
  • A President's Safety Award program featuring quarterly cash bonuses for superintendents with the best safety records and a recognition lunch for project team members who work with the superintendent to plan for, promote and ensure safety excellence.
